Amnesty International warns against increasing persecution of protesters and journalists

The organization organized a solidarity event at its headquarters that brought together the families of political detainees and detainees of conscience, stressing the need to pay attention to what the legal and judicial arena is experiencing from continuous narrowing.

The organization stressed that the reform institutions have brightened the mirror reflecting the current political crisis in the country, noting a marked decline in the guarantees of fair trial and judicial independence. It considered that the expansion of judicial follow-up directly affects the fundamental rights that guarantee civil action and freedom of expression for various actors in public affairs.

Amnesty International's Director of Movement and Human Rights in Tunisia, Inaas, complained that the situation of freedoms in the country had become alarming, stressing that freedom of expression, civil action and solidarity with human rights issues are currently facing increasing threats requiring vigilance and solidarity from various civil parties.

The National Union of Tunisian Journalists had condemned on 31 October the receipt by a reporter of the newspaper Eustaq Menir Zwabi of a threat of prosecution via execution ordered by a national handball coach after he published a critical article about appointments at the Tunisian university for the game. The warning comes amid growing pressures on journalistic and legal activity, where professional and legal structures in previous periods have warned of the dangers of employing judicial proceedings against expression and media work, amid demands to stop stalking journalists and opinion leaders.
