The Tunisian Farmers' Union expects fresh tomato sales prices to consumers in Tunisia to fall to around Dinar per kilogram over the coming period, following a surge in domestic markets in late October 2026.

Retail markets recorded record levels of tomato prices ranging from 4.5 to 6 dinars per kilogram, as a result of a lack of quarterly supply within the distribution channels. On the other hand, the selling price for farmer production does not exceed levels ranging from 1 dinar to 800 mm, reflecting the breadth of the difference between farmer and final consumer prices.

The president of the Tunisian Farmers' Union asserted that the decline in production and supply shortages are due to damage to the autumn crop by the high heat wave that hit the country during the month of autumn, as well as the damage caused by the collapse of cold in the main production areas, especially in the two municipalities of Sbiba and Foussana of Kasserine State.

This disruption in supply is linked to the regulatory framework for the tomato sector, as the price of tomatoes ready for industrial conversion is subject to official fixation at 220 millimetres per kilogram, a government price that has not seen any upswing in about five years. This financial freeze with the cost of agricultural supplies has affected producers' choices and cropland over recent seasons.

Markets in the near future are looking forward to the start of a boom in tomato crop production, as a key step to rebalancing lost supply and demand, stabilizing trade and fixing prices at their predicted levels.
