The Tunisian Primary Court sentenced Riyad Ben Faal to 20 years in prison

The Financial Corruption Criminal Chamber of the Tunisian Primary Court, on the evening of Thursday 29 October 2026, sentenced the general coordinator of the PPP, Riyad Bin Fadl, to 20 years in prison. The same court ruling included 28 other defendants being jailed for nine years each.

The court imposed joint fines and penalties totaling more than 11 million dinars. These joint financial penalties targeted convicted defendants along with 14 companies cited in the same case papers.

The charges against the convicts relate to money laundering, money-laundering, exploitation of occupational and professional characteristics, and conspiracy to commit property abuse. The indictment included committing offenses and criminal offences during omissions and the acquisition of property expropriated after 2011.

The facts of the file date back to Riyad bin Fadl's arrest on 14 November 2023 at Tunisian Carthage Airport, before the First Investigative Judge of the Financial Judiciary issued a prison sentence in his own right on 24 November 2023. The legal framework for money covered by the tracking is based on Presidential Decree No. 13 of 14 March 2011, concerning the seizure of money and property from 114 members of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's family and close associates, as well as anti-terrorism and money laundering legislation.

Legal proceedings of defence bodies and public prosecutors allow appeals against these preliminary rulings to be brought before the Court of Appeal in accordance with the modalities laid down in the Code of Criminal Procedure.
