Parliament is discussing major trends for the 2027 budget amid financial challenges

These discussions come amid growing challenges facing the country's public financial balances, after the two Houses of Parliament received official documents from the executive.

The draft budget document for 2027 identified estimates of state revenues of about 54.28 billion Tunisian dinars, while total expenditures amounted to about 68.895 billion Tunisian Dinars. The financial trends are based on asserting the social role of the state, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as addressing the pressures of debt servicing and the fallout from volatile energy and currency markets.

This legislative trajectory was launched after the government transferred the Bill for Finance and Budget to Parliament by the constitutional deadline of 15 October 2026. The measure was preceded by a narrow Cabinet chaired by the Government on 4 August 2026 to set the initial axes, followed by a meeting of the Finance Committee of the Regional Council on 12 October 2026 to assess the implementation of the 2026 budget.

Joint work between the two Parliaments is based on the provisions of Section 78 of the Constitution and the laws governing the relationship between the two Houses of Parliament in the study and approval of financial bills. The next step is to organise joint hearings for representatives of the Ministry of Finance and members of the government, in preparation for the referral of the joint report to the General Meeting for discussion and final vote before the legal deadline expires in December.
