The Tunisian electric and gas company has developed a storage capacity of 150 megawatts

The Tunisian electricity and gas company plans to develop a total storage capacity of 150 megawatts by summer 2027. The Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has announced a plan to concentrate this energy via batteries to ensure continuity of supply and avoid power outages during peak periods, as well as facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.

The plan includes operating half of the declared capacity by 50% in the first phase when the project enters service in 2027, in anticipation of raising the system's total storage capacity to a minimum of 300 megawatts by summer 2028. These devices are designed to alleviate high loads on the power grid and ensure supply stability for different areas.

The ministry confirmed that this initiative is aimed at reducing power outages during peak times and ensuring the integration of electricity generated from solar and wind power plants. Through these measures, the authorities seek to address the incidental production deficit and ensure the continuous flow of energy in line with increasing national needs. These projects come after the country experienced an electricity crisis in the summer of 2026 when demand peaked at 6,400 megawatts while the available production capacity did not exceed 4,450 megawatts. The move falls within the legal framework of the Energy Laws and Finance Law aimed at raising the contribution of renewable energies to the national electricity mix from 16% by 2027 to 35% by 2030.

The next direct step is to complete the bidding process for the selection of suppliers and determine the final locations for installing battery units. The field implementation of works and installation of equipment is scheduled to begin before the end of 2026.
