Gabès launches the pilot phase of the first peasant census in Lima

The Gabès Regional Agricultural Development Delegation initiated the pilot phase of the first public census of agriculture, selecting the region of Limaoua belonging to the Gabès Sud Local Delegation as a model county. This stage is aimed at testing technical readiness and evaluating approved procedures before generalization, following the completion of supervisor oriented formation courses and counting assistants.

The field teams of the Farmer's Guidance Cells in Almaty, Menzel El Habib and Ghannouch conducted live surveys with a number of farmers to collect data from their exploiters. The collected data was immediately entered through process-specific digital boards, to secure the transfer of information and verify it accurately and quickly.

This step is part of the announcement by the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Marine Fisheries on 30 October 2026 in the city of Science, Tunisia, of the launch of the first digital annual census of agriculture for the period 2026-2027. The Presidency has allocated a narrow Council of Ministers to follow the project arrangements and approve it as a tool for guiding development policies and modernising the agricultural system.

This census offsets the last comprehensive census dating back to 2005, by building an accurate geographic and digital database of agricultural exploitations at each headquarters level. The project is also based on an institutional and regulatory framework for public statistics to provide a national digital data bank.

The next step is to expand field data collection to all accreditations and various states by November 2026. Field surveys will continue between 6 and 8 months before the 2027-2028 agricultural season.
