Tunisian universities and homes witnessed protest movements called by the General Union of Tunisian Students on 1 November 2026, to demand improved health care, living and living conditions in university housing institutions. Participants raised urgent demands for managing deficiencies in student services, especially within high student density university districts.

Student movement representatives warned of a deterioration in the university services system after medical emergencies were recorded that revealed a lack of necessary medical framework. They stressed that the lack of a medical and paramedical framework during the night periods puts the lives of residents at risk when sudden breakdowns occur, demanding the generalization of permanent nursing units in various institutions.

The Department of University Services South has reported referring all calls and surveillance camera recordings to judicial and security authorities to open an official investigation.

The backdrop of these moves is a general strike by students of Sfax colleges and institutes on 23 October 2026, following the death of a student after being exposed to an emergency health crisis within the campus of Sir Mansoor on the night of 21 October 2026. Regulations governing higher education place the responsibility for providing housing, pension, preventive and health care on the duties of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research's public university services, amid criticism of poor coverage in a housing capacity of about 1,200 students.

A negotiation session held on October 26, 2026 resulted in an agreement to lift the ceasefire in exchange for a temporary evening health watch. Planned commitments include equipping a permanent nursing unit within the campus by mid-December 2026 and providing an official nurse before the end of that month, with student representatives continuing to follow up on these commitments.
