The Forest Service is launching a plan to reforest 30,000 hectares

The General Forestry Administration announced on 3 November 2026 a strategic action plan extending until 2035 to reforest 30,000 hectares of forested areas damaged by fires in Tunisia. The initiative aims to compensate for the lost vegetation cover and modernise field surveillance systems.

The direct executive step for the 2026-2027 season involves intervening in an area of 24,000 hectares, distributed between 15,000 and 260 hectares allocated for natural regeneration and 8,716 hectares for forest and pastoral plantings. The plan prioritizes the rehabilitation of rainforests and pine forests based on local plant varieties capable of adapting to drought and climate change.

The strategy includes upgrading the early warning and prevention system via digital platforms and automated monitoring towers, as well as building water tanks at high altitudes to accelerate field intervention to extinguish fires. These actions are part of Tunisia's United Nations Decade commitments to restore ecosystems 2021-2030 and mobilize international climate finance. This strategy comes to address previous losses that the country has experienced between 2011 and 2025, where forest fires have claimed 74,000,602 hectares. The economic and financial cost of the damage was 241.16 million Tunisian dinars, which required a comprehensive programme to restore the damaged forest system.

The next stage aims to produce and plant 10 million seedlings with the infrastructure of 10 forest habitat qualification in different regions. It is also decided to plant an additional 1.8 million seedlings in partnership with civil society and the private sector on the occasion of the National Tree Day celebration on 8 November 2026.
