The Democratic Party takes a majority in the US Congress after midterm elections
The Democratic opposition controls both the House and Senate after winning crucial seats in Texas, Ohio and North Carolina amid voter discontent over inflation and war with Iran.

The Democratic Party won the U.S. Congressional midterm elections held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after seizing control of both the House and Senate from the Republican Party across the United States. These findings marked a shift in the balance of political power in tandem with President Donald Trump's conservative presidential campaign.
Democratic candidates were able to decide decisive races in former Republican strongholds, including Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina, giving the party the majority needed to lead the Senate and regain a majority in the House of Representatives. The election contest included all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, along with 35 of the 100 Senate seats.
President Donald Trump commented on the results considering that if he were a candidate in this election, he would have won a landslide victory. His party's loss came amid growing dissatisfaction among American voters with economic inflation, policies pursued and rising living costs, as well as the repercussions of military operations and war with Iran, issues that controlled the course of candidates' election campaigns.
The Republican Party has been imposing full legislative control over both chambers of Congress since early 2025 after winning the previous general election. Constitution requires a full renewal of House seats and one-third of Senate seats periodically every two years, which now gives Democrats constitutional and legal powers including chairing standing committees, summoning executive management officials, and managing federal budget appropriations, reducing the current administration's ability to pass its agenda in the remaining two years.
New members of Congress are scheduled to be sworn in with the first official session of Congress No. 120 on Jan. 3, 2027, where the opposition will begin activating broader control powers and opening parliamentary investigations into U.S.
