Unknowns are cutting down old olive trees in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun

A special olive grove in the Qanishia district of the West Mansoura Governorate of Sidi Ali Ben Aoun Local Delegation in Sidi Bouzid Province, on the night of Wednesday 4 November 2026, was subjected to a prolonged sabotage and assault. An unknown assailant broke into the wreckage, cutting down old trees and cutting off branches, causing extensive damage to agricultural property in the area.

The attackers used a machine-gun to cut down the trunks of some trees that were over 50 years old, destroying large parts of them to transport and seize timber. Site inspection showed that the trees targeted for cutting were free of fruit, contrary to initial estimates that the agricultural crop was stolen.

This assault sparked a state of resentment and anger among the settlers who mirrored its effects in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, considering it a violation of private property and damage to peasant livelihoods. Documented photographs of the site showed the extent of destruction that had befallen the living trees after their limbs and entire trunks were cut down. The incident coincides with the start of the 2026-2027 olive harvest season, a period of heightened fears of theft and abuse of agricultural holdings. These acts are classified in criminal law as defined theft, directed harm to a non-king, and logging without legal grounds.

Competent security units are directing field investigations and investigations to identify those involved in the operation and track them to the judiciary. The proceedings to limit the material damage suffered by the landlord are ongoing in advance of bringing the case to justice.
