The Justice Department explains the fact that 566 million dinars were spent on prison construction

The clarification came in response to media reports published yesterday that talked about tracking this amount for prison institutions and other expansions.

The budget project data indicate that the programmed payment appropriations for the prison and reform sector amount to 566.773 million dinars for 2027, versus 537.350 million dinars in 2026. This represents an increase of 29.423 million dinars, or an increase of 5.47%.

The Ministry confirmed that this amount relates to the prison and reform programme as a whole and does not represent a cost directed exclusively to construction and expansion works. She noted that the infrastructure projects presented to Parliament, including the construction of Blee Prison and the expansion of existing units, remain separate from the total allocations for the programme.

These credits are part of the total Justice Mission budget of DIN 1112 million for 2027, which represents about 1.61% of the total state expenditure in the Finance Bill submitted to the legislative committees. Independent infrastructure projects include the construction of a prison with capacity for up to 1,000 inmates at a cost of 64 million dinars.

Parliament shall continue to hold joint hearings and discussions between the competent committees to discuss details of the mission of justice in advance of their presentation for a vote and final approval.
